As more data is communicated over larger distances, huge bottlenecks arise in the Internet infrastructure. To meet this growing demand for Metropolitan Area (MAN), several serial data standards are competing for business. 10 Gigabit Ethernet components are expected to be at the front because they are less expensive and more reliable than their counterparts.

XAUI is a layer in which 10 Gigabit Ethernet service providers implement 10 Gigabit Ethernet components. The XAUI interface is subjected to several performance metrics that attempt to quantify interoperability with other XAUI components. For diagnostic purposes, quantifying all the jitter components present on the serial data stream can be useful to identify the root cause of jitter.
